Why is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) important in your marketing?

What does SEO mean for you and your business?

Notice how you’re on your own smart phone and when you need to look up a business name, question or location, take a moment to reflect this behavior. What are you doing? You pull out your phone, swipe, and hit Safari or your internet browser app. You tap the text box at the top and then what?

In these cases – which is what 9 out of 10 people do that own a smartphone when they are in need of information on the spot – over 75-80% of those people are typing in a phrase or term to Search for. Not a web address. Not your website name. Not your dot com, or dot org , or dot gov. You know why? Because we’re all lazy and are psychologically trained that our smartphones are gateways to easily accessible information by typing or saying (what up Siri?) whatever it is we’re needing to find out. This leads to almost not caring what your website name is.

Check out this short graph right here. Only 9-10% of people got to this website by actually typing in the name.  We’ll be honest: this can be anywhere from 5-30% of how someone got to a website. But in most cases with the research we read and what we see with our own clients – it rarely breaks 15-20%.

daggle-traffic

61% of internet users research products and services online first. When researching those products and services, 4 out of 10 people began their shopping by using a search engine – not typing in a web address or YOUR web address. Google searches accounted for 65% of these web searches consisting of all types of things from new cars, dog grooming, golfing, computers, cell phones, drug stores, pizza, restaurants, bakeries, wine, business services, candy, electronics, vacation destinations, home loans and banks/credit unions, home improvement services, clothes, education/college, and a lot more.

75% of users never scroll past the first page of web search results. 70% of the links search users click on are organic—not paid —meaning people skip the grayed out box of “Suggested Results” at the top of the page and scroll down the Google, Yahoo or Bing page looking for other information and results that have credibility, not paid advertisements. Many of these search engines value Blog posts and Social Media content more than webpages. Does your website have a blog? Do you manage your own Facebook or Instagram account?
